Bug#551442: gnome-panel: crashes unpredictably

The panel is crashing at inconsistent intervals; sometimes minutes,
sometimes hours, but at least multiple times per day. Often it will
restart again immediately, but sometimes it will not restart until I
kill the X session from a text console and then start the X session
again.

I have tried to narrow down the circumstances, but no matter what I
remove from the panel, it still crashes just as inconsistently as
before.

Today I have installed ‘bug-buddy’, hoping that it would provide a
debug trace to help diagnose this; but the panel has since crashed
several times and no bug-buddy dialogue appeared.

Please let me know how else I can diagnose this, to help get this bug
located and resolved.
