It looks like this was fixed for version 2.26.  From changelog.Debian.gz:

| evince (2.26.1-1) unstable; urgency=low

|  * Reinstate evince-gtk, since we can now disable GConf and

and the version I have installed does not depend on GConf or gnome-keyring.
