Even if this was enough (I have not checked whether it is), you’d get in
other failure scenarios because running applications, started with the
old version of the library, would restart the daemon with an
incompatible protocol.

If this error is just a one-timer during upgrades, the best answer is to
spew a high priority debconf message asking the user to log out and in
again as soon as possible.

If anyone can confirm this is really a one-time upgrade issue, I’ll
include this in the next upload.
