"CLUTTER_VBLANK=none gnome-shell" works on my intel laptop,

After looking at KMS settings I added the following to:
/etc/initramfs-tools/modules:
intel_agp
drm
i915 modeset=1

and this to the the end of the linux line in my grub.cfg:
video=i915:modeset=1

now running gnome-shell works just as good as running clutter_vblank=none

it all looks okay from the desktop but running dmesg i think i have
missed something because i get about 100 lines of:
[drm:drm_wait_vblank] *ERROR* failed to aquire vblank counter, -22

it does look like i'm having screen refresh problems in things like a
gksu prompt so that error must mean something.

I have yet to try this on my ATI computer, which i should be able to
do tonight or tomorrow.
if clutter_vblank will work for my ATI card are there ways of getting
around it like with the Intel card?
