I tried gdm3 from svn with plymouth, and there's still a very noticeable
gap between plymouth and gdm.

Seems like gdm needs additional patches (the plymouth-integration branch
in git) to handle the transition. This also requires further changes to
the X server, and all KMS enabled drivers (to add and handle the -nr
option).

None of this seems to have been merged upstream.
