That'd be a lot simpler indeed.

Mmm, greeter-main.c's main() seems to be doing it:

        res = session_manager_connect ();
        if (! res) {
                g_warning ("Unable to connect to session manager");
                exit (1);
        }

        res = register_client ();
        if (! res) {
                g_warning ("Unable to register client with session manager");

I tried to move gdm-simple-greeter to Desktop and beep to Application
and the beep indeed seems to happen once the greeter is ready.
