There are alternatives[1] for the most important commands (which I have tested), 
unless anyone wants to ITP a python replacement project[2] (which I haven't).

dbus-send --type=method_call  --print-reply 
--dest=org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.rhythmbox  /org/mpris/MediaPlayer2 
org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.Player.PlayPause

dbus-send --type=method_call  --print-reply 
--dest=org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.rhythmbox  /org/mpris/MediaPlayer2 
org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.Player.Next

These could be documented in NEWS.Debian.
