Probably not, given the release.  infocmp tells me that neither "xterm"
nor "xterm-debian" have smm/rmm on either unstable or testing
("xterm-new" does, but people using gnome-terminal are unlikely to set
TERM).

This thread doesn't mention eightBitInput - that's been the usual answer
for bash.
