"Who cares?" you might ask.  Well, I do.

 - spurious messages mean that .xsession-errors gets longer and longer
 - assertion failures tend to point to bigger problems (buggy assumptions
   or buggy code)
 - harmless errors make debugging unnecessarily difficult by hiding
   harmful ones.
