You can probably fix this by installing the package called
libcanberra-gtk-module

This package deals with sounds, though, so I doubt it has anything to
do with appearance

Are you sure the change was triggered by a new gcalctool as opposed to
a lack of the gtk theme?

Have you tried going to the appearance window and changing the theme,
to see if the calculator is fixed?

Can you send a screenshot of how it looks, so that we can understand
what you mean by "bland" ?
