I meant to ask what it is meant to accomplish.  Joss mentioned that
dropping "-z defs" is a bad thing since it would let undefined symbols
slip through the cracks.  But these plugins are not linked to the X11
libraries that they use or even libm when they use routines from
there, so it seems strange.

Of course that doesn't change that there is probably a binutils bug
here somewhere.  Thanks for your help so far in tracking it down.
