  I don't think so.  At least, neither dmesg nor /var/log/kern.log
mention anything related to OOM, and the box isn't swapping particularly
heavily.

  I followed the instructions (except "gnome-session-fallback --debug"
instead of "gnome-session --debug"), and now I seem to have a working
session.  I still get some of the flickering of the icons in the
notification area, but I haven't been able to crash the session all
morning and my Xchat keeps its pretty look, despite starting several of
the usual suspects at once.  I think I'll stick with what's working for
today, but I'll try again next week, both with and without --debug.
