Several people have reported on debian-devel that exactly that happens,
and I assumed it was due to the same issue, but it may have been due to
some unrelated bug.

Regardless of whether it opens in GIMP or doesn't open at all, though,
surely you see my point?  Yes, everything should use the FDO system, but
it doesn't yet, and PDF files are particularly common things to want to
open.  Just this thread has consumed more time and effort than it would
take to add a temporary workaround for that one common use case for
wheezy.

I promise, I personally wouldn't ask you to do the same for wheezy+1.  By
that point we should have some better, systemic solution.
