Yes, I missed it. I have «xserver-xorg-video-all» installed (and thus
all xserver-xorg-video-* including "radeon") and in Xorg.0.log RADEON
seems to be loaded. I have a "ATI M56P [Radeon Mobility X1600]" video
card that also needs non-free firmware (also installed).

As a separate note, I reproduced this only on my laptop because here
Gnome shell works. On my workstation it doesn't (it didn't work at all
after the introduction of Gnome 3) and on my homestation it used to
work until recently (at the same time with the "cairo" upgrades) - but
also I don't use it that much.
