Bug#674700: Fw: Attempt to update Gnome on Debian kills system

Update:

"aptitude update && aptitude dist-upgrade"

fixed it.  But I would heartily recommend against
updating gnome in isolation, that is DO NOT do the
following!!!:

and follow the instructions

apt-get install aptitude tasksel
tasksel install gnome-desktop --new-install

It can break your machine.
