I think you're describing the "screen shield", vaguely based on the ones
on mobile/touchscreen devices. A screenshot (not on Debian):

That's also what you get if you lock the screen, or let the screensaver
lock.

>From there, you're meant to be able to see the login screen by pressing
Enter or Escape, clicking and dragging the background upwards, or just
starting to type blindly; in any of those cases, the screen shield
should slide upwards to reveal the login screen (and if you just started
typing, the keystrokes are passed on to the login screen widgets). Do
none of those work for you?
