Installing `systemd-shim` indeed fixes this problem on my system with
Debian Sid/unstable and an Nvidia graphics card and the Nouveau driver
which currently does not support hardware acceleration.

Svante, thank you for submitting this report even though you already
knew you’ll are going to change to different software. Andreas, thank
you for the answer with the solution. Too bad updated packages were not
updated yet.
