That's why *wheezy* shipped a gdm3 package with a Conflicts against gdm...

My guess is that it's very uncommon for someone to just install gdm alone.
You usually install something like gnome-core or similar, which will on
upgrade pull in gdm3 and get rid of the old gdm package. Real users should
thus not have gdm package around when upgrading to Jessie, but maybe
the release notes needs an improved description saying that people
should run aptitude and look over "Obsolete and Locally Created Packages"
before dist-upgrading.
