That patch is not a full solution: there are other compiler warnings
on i386, which are made fatal by the default configure options.

I think the real root cause is a missing backslash in debian/rules,
which led to some of the intended configure options being ignored.
I've fixed that in svn, but not fully tested the result, so I haven't
released it so far.
