While it's interesting to see how other distros handle complex
integration issues, I don't think this is a convincing point.

xdg-desktop-portal-gnome is implemented as a systemd user service
which means it can be disabled.

Or if you want to use a different portal backend, you can customize it
with an appropriate user conf file starting in xdg-desktop-portal 1.17
which will be in Unstable soon. See

I believe either of those methods could serve your need of having a
more "minimal" setup without risking the user experience for other
people.
