Yes, you're right.  We're working on fixing this.  More details below.

unstable and won't be packaged.

There are almost no differences between this version and 0.5.0.  Will be

This has been ready for some time, waiting for a sponsor, I think.

We don't do backports of the core libraries as this contradicts the 
backports policy, I believe (soname bumps).
