Version: 5.0.3-4
Severity: normal

I've just started playing around with some of the SRTM-3 DEMs, and so I
thought I'd give GRASS a spin, but this is how far I'm getting....:

GRASS:~ > r.in.bin bytes=2
input=/home/kjetil/Fritid/Fjell/ChangTang/N35E081.hgt
output=N35E081.raster title=Kunlun south=35N west=81E r=1201 c=1201
Segmentation fault
GRASS:~ >

The input file is from
ftp://edcsgs9.cr.usgs.gov/pub/data/srtm/Eurasia/N35E081.hgt.zip
just unzipped.

Since I'm relatively new to GIS systems, it is possible my parameters
are so weird no program could possibly grok them, but my homebrew import
into the R statistics system works fine, so I think I'm not totally off....
:-) Besides, a program shouldn't ever segfault, should it?

It may be related to Bug #234275, but since the discussion in that bug
is going in a very different direction, I opened a new bug instead.

I sort of think this bug should be "important", since it isn't a lot you
can do if you can't data in, but I leave it entirely to the maintainers
to decide things like that.
