As of version 2.95.x, the ARM fortran compiler (g77/f77) generates bad PIC
(Position Independent Code) objects, thus the fortran objects contained
in libdf cannot be embedded in the shared library libdf.so.

They're still available in the static library (libdf.a).

To link fortran program with libdf, just use:

 f77 -o <program> <objects> -static -ldf -dynamic <other libraries>

rather than:

 f77 -o <program> <objects> -ldf <other libraries>

Luckily (or ironically), the libmfhdf fortran objects do not trigger
the g77 PIC bug.

The g77 bug is #90363 in the debian bug tracking system. The
yet-unreleased gcc 3.0 is rumoured to fix the problem.

Philippe Troin <phil at fifi.org>.
