Roland, thanks for bringing this issue to our attention. And thanks for
the patch Michael.

The fix from upstream changeset r25197 is included in the GDAL 1.10.x
package currently in experimental. The transition from 1.9.0 to 1.10.1
should happen as soon as possible, see #712688.

I'm not sure if we should apply the patch for 1.9.0 package. It's
probably a good idea if this issue threatens the removal of GDAL from
testing before the transition.
