I suspect GCC 6 is at fault here, hdf5 hasn't been update in unstable in 
a while.

Yesterday I fixed this issue for PDAL 1.3.0-RC1 which was uploaded to 
experimental and currently in NEW, so I'll cherry pick that change and 
upload a new revision of 1.2.0 to unstable to fix this issue in the mean 
time until 1.3.0 is released and moved from experimental to unstable.
