From Jan Minar , 241900@bugs.debian.org Sat Apr 3 18:56:40 2004 From: Jan Minar , 241900@bugs.debian.org (Jan Minar) Date: Sat, 3 Apr 2004 20:56:40 +0200 Subject: Bug#241900: grub: Unattended bootup impossible with ``terminal console serial'' Message-ID: <20040403185640.GA24090@kontryhel> --cNdxnHkX5QqsyA0e Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Package: grub Version: 0.91-2 Severity: important Hi! With ``terminal console serial'', grub will repeat the ``Press any key to continue...'' message forever -- unattended bootup is impossible. I don't particularly like the message. If it's needed at all, it must be possible to specify a timeout after which a (possibly) unattended bootup will start. If it's necessary to have chosen either serial or console before the actual bootup starts, one of them would be specified as the more equal among equals (e.g. the first one specified, i.e. ``terminal foo bar'' would select foo). With ``terminal serial'', grub won't boot unless the terminal is attached. = In fact, it probably doesn't even load the menu. I have pppd connected to the serial terminal line on the client side, and h= ave to switch it off and fire up minicom by hand. When minicom is started, I f= ind the grub in the menu or at the commandline (I presume this is because of the random bash pppd sends). When there is no pppd running, i.e. nothing is attached to the /dev/ttyS0, the menu is what I see having fired up minicom.= On no occasion grub has booted unattended. The physical line is the 3-wire ba= re minimum. =20 Unattended bootup should be possible regardless of whether a serial termina= l is attached or not. Not having a timeout, or specifying one of the pausing commands is the way to not having grub booted. I fear some valid PPP data might actually command grub to do something silly, like wiping out a MBR or the like. Maybe there is a similar issue with SLIP and/or other serial line protocols? Lots of users seem to want this for some reason. ;-) As part of doing this, we need to add the entries to menu.lst, and that mean we need to map between the linux partition name and grub's representation.=20 There is a nice peice of code to do just that in update-grub, in the convert function, but there's no good way to get at that function. Could you please break it out into a separate file -- either a standalone utility, or just a file somewhere we can source and then call the function would be ok. When extracting the image tarball into a dir, the dir is not cleaned first, resulting in possible extraneous files (my previous tarball was b0rked, and with the correct one I had 2 stage2 files in my tree, which caused failure) 2. When using e2tools (and possibly mtools), only boot/grub contents was copied. This patch recreates all dirs and copies all files; although not perfect, that should be sufficient for most purposes. I also changed one more thing to make this script a bit more idiomatically correct, with the idea of allowing it to run "set -e" some day. -- Yann Dirson | Why make M$-Bill richer & richer ? From Joey Hess , 243835@bugs.debian.org Thu Apr 15 01:40:19 2004 From: Joey Hess , 243835@bugs.debian.org (Joey Hess) Date: Wed, 14 Apr 2004 20:40:19 -0400 Subject: Bug#243835: grub-install hangs with xfs root/boot Message-ID: <20040415004019.GA7427@kitenet.net> --OXfL5xGRrasGEqWY Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Package: grub Version: 0.93+cvs20031021-8 Severity: normal Tags: d-i The debian installer can install a system with / or /boot on XFS. When it tries to install grub on such a system, the grub-install run hangs, seemingly forever. The last thing output is "Probing devices to guess BIOS drives." The cpu is pegged too. This has been reproduced on more than one machine, and I found something that looked like the same problem on google. I've seen it with both the 2.4.25 and 2.6.5 kernels. We have put a guard in d-i to deal with this, it warns users that XFS /boot (or root) will not work with grub. This is not an ideal solution, users want to use XFS for these partitions. Note that often, if the hanging grub is killed, grub-install can be re-run and it does not hang, and works. I don't know why, but this makes reproducing the problem annoying; the best way is to do a new d-i install each time. :-/ Ancedotally, people seem to think the problem happens if the XFS filesystem is not synced to disk when grub accesses it directly. I've tried a few things. I tried adding 3 calls to sync before each call to $grub_shell, but it still hangs. I remounted the filesystem ro and then back to rw before calling grub-install, on the theory this might make xfs put it in a consistent state, but no luck, it still hung. It would be nice if this could be fixed, or even worked around better than it currently is. --=20 see shy jo --OXfL5xGRrasGEqWY Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" Content-Description: Digital signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.4 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFAfdnzd8HHehbQuO8RAsVHAJ9f87H61PJS2kYwcNx1HyMpzcQyigCfc31C YHl/HbZZUbVLVgV6NtMp874= =Q1Bc -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --OXfL5xGRrasGEqWY-- From Martin Pool , 243858@bugs.debian.org Thu Apr 15 06:26:19 2004 From: Martin Pool , 243858@bugs.debian.org (Martin Pool) Date: Thu, 15 Apr 2004 15:26:19 +1000 Subject: Bug#243858: doc: wrong section title Message-ID: Package: grub-doc Version: 0.93+cvs20031021-8 Severity: normal Hi, One section of the manual has a title/description mismatched with its content: 18. I believe that this specific problem lies in the way that I am (ad)using grubs 'device.map' file. So, the bug is probably invalid (and I'm happy for it to go away). There is indeed a 'menu.lst' and a 'device.map' file in the=20 'grub config' (It is the entire contents of the /boot directory.) and it get's copied to the target machine. The previous version of GRUB (0.91-2) worked using the method I described, which is why I logged the bug when this behaviour changed (ie. something broke between this and 0.93+cvs20031021-8). I will use the 'grub-install' script with the --recheck option (maybe even deleting the 'device.map' file before using it). My first thought was to use "findfs" to lookup the block devices, but it's only included in the e2fsprogs package. The program "blkid" from package libblkid1 seemed more appropriate - it still makes a dependency, but at least it's sort of a lesser common denominator than to depend on e2fsprogs (e2fsprogs itself pre-depends on libblkid1). On the other hand, e2fsprogs is in base/required... Oh well. It is maintained by a group colaboration on the pkg-grub-devel mailing list. I've had little time to work on grub lately and all the update-grub stuff has been left upto me. I attempted to re-write update-grub and when I asked for feed back I got none. If you'd like to be involved let me know. The problem with a lot of the bugs people are complaining about is that when fixed break something else. Also all the devfs bugs are people screwing up the systems by mixing devfs and plan /dev. I know it would be great if update-grub/grub could handle. Anyway my main point is you can't just go apply the patch that came with the bug report most of the time there wrong or short sighted. You'll have to test them throughly and understand them completely. Now the other problem with bugs in grub itself is I know very little about the internals of grub and filesystems and things. So these are just forwarded upstream. This makes me the unnecassary middle man. And I don't have the time to keep doing that. So thanks for your interest I hope you have what it takes to get involved. Isn't this a typical situation to file a RFH[0][1][2] on wnpp? I know, there is currently not a single RFH filed, but someone must be the first one. Add X-Debbugs-Cc: debian-devel to ensure that enough people read it. If more people did that, it'd be wort the effort to enable all kinds of QA pages to show nice overviews of packages that are requesting additional help, most likely in the form of co-maintainers (which is basically what RFH means most of the time, but not necessarily), just like is done now for packages that request a full maintainer takeover[4]. Alternatively, or in this case I'd say additionaly, tagging the appropriate bugs as 'help' might also attract people, and (also important) make it clear in the bug overview page that the maintainer(s) won't be able to quickly solve that bug(s) and is looking for additional advice/help. --Jeroen [0] http://lists.debian.org/debian-qa/2003/debian-qa-200308/msg00145.html [1] http://lists.debian.org/debian-www/2003/debian-www-200311/msg00117.html [2] It isn't completely agreed on which TLA[3] to use, but RFH is quite general and would therefore fit most cases, whether there is really a request for co-maintainers, or merely some additional help, or bug triage, or whatever. By going for RFH, there will probably not be need for yet another wnpp tag soon. [3] Three Letter Acronym, http://wikipedia.org/wiki/TLA [4] This has apparantly been discussed already numerous times, but as of yet without success. However nothing is yet stopping you from filing RFH's, and I've put it on my TODO list to do something about this (i.e., file wishlist bugs and/or patches against the packages.qa.d.o, the wnpp overview pages, etc etc), since for already a long time this has been discussed, no-one objected to this, rather found it a good idea, but simply the implementation step stalled. -- Jeroen van Wolffelaar Jeroen@wolffelaar.nl (also for Jabber & MSN; ICQ: 33944357) http://Jeroen.A-Eskwadraat.nl From pme@devphil.com Mon Apr 26 19:59:17 2004 From: pme@devphil.com (Phil Edwards) Date: Mon, 26 Apr 2004 14:59:17 -0400 Subject: Are the GRUB packages maintained or orphaned? Meta-question: the package description page is generated from the text in the debian/control file. The package's QA page is entirely generated. Do packages have any "status/whiteboard/notes" pages, where the package maintainers can make small announcements, like "I'm completely buried by other work and will not have time to do anything until 2050, when my clones are supposed to arrive and can take up the slack"? > I attempted to re-write update-grub and when I asked for feed back I got > none. > > If you'd like to be involved let me know. Adding a single image to grub increases notably the package size, and this is probably not what most users want. Luis, would you like to prepare such a package will all your images? Once it is in the archive, we can get grub to Recommend/Suggest it. > Which image were you guys thinking of using as default? Unless we find a way to activate this feature without risking to break the installed bootloader, I think making image-less the default is the safest. -- Robert Millan "[..] but the delight and pride of Aule is in the deed of making, and in the thing made, and neither in possession nor in his own mastery; wherefore he gives and hoards not, and is free from care, passing ever on to some new work." -- J.R.R.T., Ainulindale (Silmarillion) From zeratul2@wanadoo.es Fri Apr 30 15:21:14 2004 From: zeratul2@wanadoo.es (Robert Millan) Date: Fri, 30 Apr 2004 16:21:14 +0200 Subject: Bug#235017, Bug#236356, New Debian grubconf-0.5.1-1 In-Reply-To: <20040430041800.GF652@ruslug.rutgers.edu> References: <20040324194411.GD27585@ruslug.rutgers.edu> <20040324213154.GC997@khazad.dyndns.org> <20040430041800.GF652@ruslug.rutgers.edu> Message-ID: <20040430142114.GA15762@khazad.dyndns.org> On Fri, Apr 30, 2004 at 12:18:00AM -0400, Luis R. Note that the `gcc' in Build-Depends is still redundant. gcc is a build-essential package and hence not needed there. Remember to fix that for your next upload. I also noticed that upstream moved /usr/share/doc to /usr/doc. I suggest you tell them they should move it back to support the FHS standard. That way you don't have to work around it in debian/rules. -- Robert Millan "[..] but the delight and pride of Aule is in the deed of making, and in the thing made, and neither in possession nor in his own mastery; wherefore he gives and hoards not, and is free from care, passing ever on to some new work." -- J.R.R.T., Ainulindale (Silmarillion) From katie@ftp-master.debian.org Fri Apr 30 15:36:54 2004 From: katie@ftp-master.debian.org (Archive Administrator) Date: Fri, 30 Apr 2004 10:36:54 -0400 Subject: Processing of grubconf_0.5.1-1_i386.changes Message-ID: grubconf_0.5.1-1_i386.changes uploaded successfully to localhost along with the files: grubconf_0.5.1-1.dsc grubconf_0.5.1.orig.tar.gz grubconf_0.5.1-1.diff.gz grubconf_0.5.1-1_i386.deb Greetings, Your Debian queue daemon From installer@ftp-master.debian.org Fri Apr 30 15:47:06 2004 From: installer@ftp-master.debian.org (Debian Installer) Date: Fri, 30 Apr 2004 10:47:06 -0400 Subject: grubconf_0.5.1-1_i386.changes ACCEPTED Message-ID: Accepted: grubconf_0.5.1-1.diff.gz to pool/main/g/grubconf/grubconf_0.5.1-1.diff.gz grubconf_0.5.1-1.dsc to pool/main/g/grubconf/grubconf_0.5.1-1.dsc grubconf_0.5.1-1_i386.deb to pool/main/g/grubconf/grubconf_0.5.1-1_i386.deb grubconf_0.5.1.orig.tar.gz to pool/main/g/grubconf/grubconf_0.5.1.orig.tar.gz Announcing to debian-devel-changes@lists.debian.org Closing bugs: 235017 235345 Thank you for your contribution to Debian.
