I tried to use grub's splashimage with a nvidia geforce 440mx.
When I boot, the screen remains blank, and a cursor blinks on the top
left. After the timeout, or when I press enter, the screen gets corrupted filled
with characters. After the kernel starts, the screen gets back to
normal.

IIRC I've seen grub splashimage work on my computer with one of gentoo's
old livecds.
