Package: kernel-package
Version: 8.135
Severity: normal

I installed Debian with netinst normally. (I configured raid-1 and it
worked fine - shouldn't have anything with this to do, though). I
compiled a new kernel using /boot/config-2.6.8-2-686 as .config for
the compilation. I couldn't compile as mentioned in "man make-kpkg":

    make-kpkg --rootcmd fakeroot kernel_image

I had to add "--initrd". This gives a warning!, but it must be there
to boot from that kernel.

I installed the new kernel with "dpkg -i kernel-image...deb". The
installation messes up the contents between

## ## End Default Options ##
and
### END DEBIAN AUTOMAGIC KERNELS LIST

It may change it root device from the "kopt" setting - even if it was
different. I had to move the entries outside these delimiters.

Conclusion: I cannot install a plain stable system and compile a
(non-changed) kernel, install it (and uninstall) it without leaving
the system unable to boot - because the /boot/grub/menu.lst is messed
up.
