okay.  in the meantime, i'm following through with my previous
commitment to do an NMU.  

following standard NMU procedures, i've just sent an upload into the
7-day DELAYED queue on gluck.  the only difference introduced
in this change is the addition of the line

/* XPM */

to the top of the gzipped copy of fiesta.xpm.  a point of advice for
future uploads of grub-splashimages:  there's no reason to have these
files gzipped in the source archive, as (a) it makes it impossible for
me to provide you with a sensible patch, and (b) the tarball containing
them is gzipped anyway.  you could always have debian/rules gzip them
in the binary debs too, so there would be not noticable difference
for people who installed the packages.  but this is a somewhat
superficial change, so i'll leave it to you to decide whether
or not it's worthwhile.
