Proposal for updage-grub: Multi-Architecture

Hi,

I'd like to propose an improvement to update-grub (if at all
possible):

I just bought a new mainboard and a new CPU, an AMD Athlon64.

Now I plan to do the following:

- One boot partition with both i386 and amd64 kernels, and two
debian installations, one with 386 packages and one with amd64
packages. Separate partitions for both debian installations, shared
  /boot with one grub menu.

Now, obviously the 386 and the amd64 kernels need different arguments
for root= (and maybe other options).

Would be nice to have architecture-specific options in menu.lst to be
appended by update-grub.

The question is how to detect the kernel architecture of a given
kernel file. Maybe the filename?

regards
Hadmut
