Except for the null line, everything else is same:

# update-grub
Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub
# grub-probe --device-map=/boot/grub/device.map -t drive -d /dev/hda1 
grub-probe: error: Cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/hda1.  Check your device.map.
