In #grub on irc.freenet.org Felix said this exception had been fixed
upstream. So I build a Debian package from upstream and created a page
in the Debian Wiki [1 in German].

The resulting version was 1.96+svn1879.

Felix also said that /dev/md0 is the wrong argument and I should use

$ sudo grub-install "(md0)"
Installation finished. No error reported.
This is the contents of the device map /boot/grub/device.map.
Check if this is correct or not. If any of the lines is incorrect,
fix it and re-run the script `grub-install'.

(hd0) /dev/sda

This solved my problem. I do not know, if it was the incorrect argument
or some improvement in the current version.

The following two issues remain in my opinion.

1. Add an example to grub-install on how to use the arguments (on
raids).

17:12 < fzielcke> hm maybe we should document this that on raid
you should better use grub-install (mdN) instead of /dev/ or hdN

System device filename is confusing for me.

2. The original cause of the problem is not known yet.

a) Why did un- and replug of a drive causes GRUB2 to fail?
b) On one disk sudo grub-install /dev/md0 seems to cause a problem (see
1.)
c) Why did on the second disk one reboot cause GRUB2 to fail?

Thanks to everyone. Especially to Solars and Felix!!! If I can do some
other things to debug this problem, please tell me.

Paul

PS: Right now only one disk attached, I will report back what happened
when I connect the second drive.
