Please check if you have the same problem with grub2
It would be good if you also could check grub2 from unstable/sid
You can install grub-common and grub-pc directly without needing a
backported version.
With the unstable version it would be good to use linux+initrd for the
new linux loader and linux16+initrd16 for the old one.
