Package: grub-pc
Version: 1.96+20090825-1
Severity: grave

grub-pc fails with the following message:

  lakeview ok % sudo dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/grub-{pc,common}_1.96+20090825-1_amd64.deb

  dpkg: error processing grub-pc (--install):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 10
  Errors were encountered while processing:
   grub-pc

Running the postinst by hand produces the following:

lakeview no % sudo env DEBCONF_DEBUG=developer sh -x /var/lib/dpkg/info/grub-pc.postinst configure
  + . /usr/share/debconf/confmodule
  + [ ! ]
  + PERL_DL_NONLAZY=1
  + export PERL_DL_NONLAZY
  + [ ]
  + exec /usr/share/debconf/frontend /var/lib/dpkg/info/grub-pc.postinst configure
  debconf (developer): frontend started
debconf (developer): frontend running, package name is grub-pc
  debconf (developer): starting /var/lib/dpkg/info/grub-pc.config configure
  debconf (developer): <-- SET grub-pc/cmdline_linux
  debconf (developer): --> 10 grub-pc/cmdline_linux doesn't exist

Indeed, there is no cmdline_linux template. I've downgraded to
1.96+20090808-1 so that I can have a usable system; if you need me to
perform any tests or provide any more information, please let me know.
