1.96+20090826-3 was the one causing the problems.
I downgraded to 1.96+20090808-1 and it is working fine

I'll try to find time tomorrow to try these if no one beats me to it.

Just to clarify what I'm seeing: with the sid version, the menu displays fine 
but trying to launch anything from there causes the unaligned pointer.

Also executing commands or using tab-completion on the grub command line 
causes the error.
