I'm trying as hard as I can, but people keep filing release-critical
bugs. ;-)

There are actually a couple of things that could cause this problem, and
only one of them is fixed in unstable.  Yves-Alexis, are your device
nodes in /dev/mapper/ (apart from /dev/mapper/control) symlinks to
../dm-*?  If so, then Jaap is correct and this is a duplicate of
#550704; if not, then this is something different.
