I think that the part about specifying the splash image was fixed by my
new version of 05_debian_theme, see #605705[1]. You should now be able
to simply copy your background image to /boot/grub/ and 05_debian_theme
will find it. Alternatively you can specify $GRUB_BACKGROUND
in /etc/default/grub.

The part about specifying the colors is IMHO a duplicate of #608283[2]
which I intend to fix shortly.
