Another downside is the combination of wild cards in the match selector
with the setting of OWNER... not only do you need to ensure the
hpmud.rules are read before other, more specific, rules which match the
same devices, the other .rules (e.g., ghpoto's) need to also start
setting OWNER so those devices don't end up owned by lp.
Surely having a Photosmart camera device owned by lp.plugdev is not good
since it allows anyone in group lp (traditionally, anyone with access
to printers) to plug in and use a Photosmart camera even though they
may not belong to group plugdev.
I think hpmud.rules should stop setting OWNER, which will then default
to root. Of course, if HPLIP were to start specifying individual
devices instead of blocks of devices, regardless of whether or not they
are printers/scanners or cameras, the setting of OWNER would not
matter.
As far as setting GROUP=lp|scanner|plugdev or using ACL's (eventually,
since it is too close to release to to implement?)...
<shrug> I don't know which would be best.
