[Pkg-hpijs-devel] Bug#647868: hplip-cups: rasterizer fails on powerpc (endianness issue?)

Package: hplip-cups
Version: 3.11.10-1
Severity: important
Tags: upstream

I tried printing the attached small jpeg (of a church lit at night) to
an HP LaserJet8000N using the hp socket connection (anonymized url for
the cups printer: hp:/net/HP_LaserJet_8000_Series?ip=X.Y.Z.W) from
this powerpc machine.

What it actually printed was the second attachment (which i scanned
back in), which looks to me like some sort of byte-swapped or even
bit-swapped) version of the file.

I made a second connection to the same printer using this command:

  lpadmin -p printer2 -E -P /usr/share/ppd/cups-included/postscript.ppd -v lpd://printer

and was able to print the image successfully, so i suspect the problem
is with the hplip connection or rasterizer and not with cups in
general.

I tried to report this upstream at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+filebug, but got the following error
message from launchpad multple times:

----------------
Timeout error

Sorry, something just went wrong in Launchpad.

We’ve recorded what happened, and we’ll fix it as soon as possible. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Trying again in a couple of minutes might work.

(Error ID: OOPS-cef35f46b922342a569199586c79a1a4)
----------------

(a different "Error ID" each time, of course).

I saw this problem first with 3.11.7-1 (wheezy) and then replicated it
with 3.11.10-1 (sid).

I'm happy to try to get more detailed information from this system;
please let me know what details would be helpful in tracking down this
problem.

Regards,

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the
proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).
