Bug#284833: superfluous directory in catalina_home?

I understand that. I'm curious as to why tomcat needs the work/_temp
directory, what does it use it for. The only avenue I had to start
answering the question was the files in the tomcat4 package; but it
appears that none of them reference it, not even the documentation.
I also can't see any files appear in there while tomcat is running.

So I wondered if it is still required to be created anymore.
Obviously, this is more a question of tidyness than anything else.
