Jim,
    Thank you for your use of Debian.  Your issue has everything to do
with the fact that you are using a bastardized JDK install.  Please
package your JDK from a .bin file using java-package, and then modify
your /etc/default/tomcat4 to point JAVA_HOME correctly.  Also, this is
not a bug with a severity of important.  Please review the information
on the Debian Bug Tracking System [0] and the usage of severity levels
[1] before filing a bug.  If you cannot even compile a simple Java
program with the JDK you installed, the problem is obviously not the
tomcat4 package.  Please review the closed bug reports on tomcat4 for
numerous examples of bugs similar to yours that have been filed.
