I did it. I used kaffe and disabled the use of the security manager in /etc/default/tomcat4/
It worked find but I would not recommend this for a productive system.
kaffe 1.1.6 will hopefully contain the needed patches to run it with security
manager.

When Sarge is released I will maintain the a repository with backported java packages
to be able to use uptodate free java on a stable Debian release.
