I have the same problem.
The script /usr/bin/argouml starts with these lines:

 JDK_DIRS="$JAVA_HOME /usr/lib/j2se/1.4 /usr/lib/j2sdk1.4 /usr/lib/j2se/1.3 /usr/lib/j2sdk1.3"

The $JDK_DIRS variable should include the path provided by the 'sun-java5-jre' package:
 /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun
