Please be patient with me ... I've never used gdb before:

[ a few "continue"s to be able to log in, start Eclipse, etc. At the
time of the crash the VNC connection just freezes but doesn't
disconnect. gdb shows:]
Program received signal SIGABRT, Aborted.

[As soon as I detach gdb the VNC connection closes as before.]
Same for gdm, i. e. connect to gdm session using VNC, log in, attach
to newest gdm process:
When I provoke the crash the VNC connection immediately closes.
There's no output in gdb during all this so I guess it isn't gdm.
I'll need further instructions (commands to run in gdb, etc) if you'd
like anything useful.
