Trying to run Tomcat5.5 on Debian 5.0/s390

Hello Debian Java Maintainers,

I'm currently testing Tomcat5.5 on a brand new install of Debian 5.0/s390 
on a System z9 EC.
Debian runs as a guest of z/VM 5.4, but I don't think this is related to 
the problem I see.
I installed Tomcat through the command 'sudo apt-get install tomcat5.5', 
that pulled in all the required dependencies.

All configured is by default, I didn't touch a single file yet. 
When I try to start tomcat, either manually (sudo /etc/init.d/tomcat5.5 
start) or automatically during the boot process, it keeps failing, with 
the following error meesage:

Feb 23 15:43:18 debkvm jsvc.exec[997]: Cannot dynamically link to 
/usr/lib/jvm/default-java/jre/lib/s390/client/libjvm.so
Feb 23 15:43:18 debkvm jsvc.exec[997]: /usr/lib/libgcj.so.90: undefined 
symbol: __data_start

Looks like there's a missing symbol somewhere, but I'm unfortunately 
unable to debug more in depth...
gcj is installed correctly:
guigui at debkvm:~$ java -version
java version "1.5.0"
gij (GNU libgcj) version 4.3.2

I'm not sure the problem is platform-related, but I didn't manage to find 
anything in Debian BTS related to this error.
I've no access to a Debian/Intel machine to do more tests. I did a test in 
Sid, but the result is the same.

Did I miss something ? Maybe you can help me ? I'm OK to do some more 
testing, if required.
The list of installed packaged is enclosed. Feel free to ask some more 
info if needed.
