I cannot reproduce the problem in a cowbuilder chroot on i386. The prerm runs

update-alternatives --list hbase-conf >>/dev/null 2>&1 &&
update-alternatives --remove-all hbase-conf

A segmentation fault is probably not a bug in hbase.
