At the risk of going off topic a little bit for this bug
report I'm quite interested in those cases where OpenJDK
is not a replacement for Sun Java. As I was originally the
OpenJDK representative for Sun in Debian I am quite interested
in this topic.

If you had a specific test case (or cases) I would encourage
you to try them with openjdk-7 from the experimental repository:

We are also collaborating with upstream in modularizing the Java
packaging for Debian for JDK 8:
