I tried to close the bug, but obviously failed.

Later that day, I discovered this hint in the awesome wiki:

If Java applications show only a grey rectangle, say "wmname LG3D"
in your .xinitrc...

IOW, the bug can be closed, and it's a known problem and a user error
(ie, mine).
