Interesting. Now that you mention it, freeplane has a similar bug report:

http://bugs.debian.org/714524

AFAIK freeplane is derived from freemind, so they might share the same
bug because of it.

Unfortunately I'm not aware of a similar application besides freeplane.
Please note that freemind is currently without a real human maintainer
but someone intends to adopt it.

http://bugs.debian.org/622960

He is working on a new release for the upcoming 1.0 version of freemind.
Perhaps it will also fix this bug.

There were only two changes in the last months that could cause this
issue. The first one was fixed with the last revision (the regression
with jgoodies-forms-java), the other one was the switch to OpenJDK7 as
the default Java Runtime Environment.

You could try to use OpenJDK6 instead, maybe there is a difference?

Otherwise I recommend to get in contact with upstream directly. I've
found this upstream bug report that could be related to yours:

http://sourceforge.net/p/freemind/bugs/1160/

Hope this helps a little

Markus
