I had committed most of these changes to the experimental branch already
but I thought we wanted to wait until the freeze ends before we upload
0.49. I also mentioned that in one of my last e-mails regarding
javatools [1].

I usually don't commit to master when the changes are not ready yet or
not intended for unstable. It's not a big problem but perhaps we should
clarify that somewhere how the git work flow in the Java team is
supposed to work to avoid similar duplicated efforts.
